I was working at my local theatre where I was publicity and marketing manager, and developing events and plays. I took the opportunity to put on my own production of A&C. I needed to cut down the roles and shorten the play to about two hours. At the time, late in 1999, Charlton and Lydia Heston were in London performing Love Letters, so I thought I'd see what help I might get from Charlton Heston, and wrote to him. He called me by phone at the theatre where I worked and asked how he could help, so I told him what I was trying to achieve. He immediatrly came up with suggestions on combining characters and on bridging scenes, and when I told him which sections I was thinking of trimming he agreed on some and advised against others but gave me better solutions. He phoned again with his ideas on how some of the characters should be played, and he emphasised the many contradictory characteristics of Cleopatra which I needed to try and get my lead actress to play. He felt it was the most difficult women's role in any Shakespeare play. Of course, I soaked up everything he said. I don't think any other actor knew the play as well as he, and that includes Laurence Olivier. A few weeks later my partner Jane and I went to see Love Letters and afterwards we met with Chuck and Lydia in their dressing room where I updated him on my progress. He was enormously interested and said that if he was in England at the time he would come and see it. Sadly he was unable to be in England when we performed the play, but it was very rewarding to have been able to discuss my production with him and to have received his invaluable help and inspiration. Malheureusement, il n'a pas pu être en Angleterre lorsque nous avons joué la pièce, mais c'était très gratifiant de pouvoir discuter de ma production avec lui et de recevoir son aide et son inspiration inestimables.
